The latest update for IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles Series is 6.003 and it comes with a short list of fixes plus some new content. IL-2 Sturmovik: Odessa and Leningrad – Siege and Liberation owners will gain access to the Bf109E-4 and Ju87D-5 in this latest update. Plus, Battle of Normandy owners can take advantage of a new Me410-focused night bomber and night fighter campaign. Let’s have a look!

Two new aircraft

The first bit of news is that IL-2 Siege and Liberation are getting the next two planned aircraft releases. The Bf109E-4 and Ju87D-5 have both arrived today. The Bf109E-4 represents the earliest model of Bf109 yet available in the sim and is equipped with a Daimler-Benz DB-601Aa and a DB-601N modification option. It has optional SC50 and SC250 bomb attachments as well.

Meanwhile the Ju87D-5 is on the opposite end of the spectrum and is one of the last mass produced versions of the infamous Stuka. This version has longer wings and the MG 17 machine guns are replaced by the much harder hitting MG151/20 cannons. One of the modifications gives us a Stuvi dive bomb sight for more accurate dive bomb runs, while another gives us the G-2 modification complete with BK 37 cannons for anti-tank ops.

New Me410 campaign release

Hornet’s Nest is the latest campaign from Jay =Jaegermeister= Yarbrough and focuses on bomber and night fighter operations in Normandy during 1943’s “baby blitz” operations.

There are 13 missions with 9-hours of projected gameplay time and the campaign can be purchased for $11.69 USD on the IL-2 store or on Steam – both with a limited time 10% discount.

  1. I am a little confused that the 109E4 did not get a better Romanian skin that actually works with the Romanian way of numbering their planes. It was used in numbers by Romanians at Odessa.

Isn’t this why the 109E4 was made for Odessa anyway? It was used heavily by the Romanians and one single training group of Germans.

The devs already gave planes that the Finns used this service, like the I-153 and even the Hurricane!

its very simular to the E7 in every way, exept for the engine boost mode and a mirror. I wish they took the time to do the romanian factionxa favour also.

    1. The Finnish specific I-153 marks came a patch or two later as I recall so hopefully that’s the plan here.

    2. There’s no way to have Romanian markings without creating a new nation in the database, which isn’t in the plans for this module.

  2. I was kind of hoping they would shed some light on ther next project here, but that’s okay. I’m sure we’ll be delighted no matter what, though I heavily suspect it is going to be a pack of Finnish aircraft as well as a mix of Soviet and Anglo-American lend Lease fighter, bombers and attack aircraft.

I’m not sure if it’ll be that big of a reveal but we’ll see what they come up with.

      2. Everything points to that. A package that fills the Finland gulf with Hawk 75, Fokker XXI, G-50, Tupolev SB… I think is too much to ask in the end of GB debelopment but I keep hope for at least a smaller surprise.

  4. How are the textures of the E-4 compared to the E-7? Are they completely redone and on Normandy-level, or are they still on Moscow-level?

In Moscow, it’s quite disappointing in VR to look outside the E-7 cockpit, and see screws randomly positioned on the hatches.

I haven’t tried it out yet but I also don’t have VR so I’m not sure if I would notice that specific difference. The Yak-1 and LaGG-3 models released recently had some tidying up done so maybe this E-4 has had the same.

    2. Its much the same as the E-7, with the major difference between the removal of the drop tank fuel line. Our modelers are just too busy with other work to do a major overhaul of the 109 cockpits.

  5. The graphics and textures are looking so good now for Great Battles. Oh how I wish they didn’t have to stop here at Odessa and Leningrad.

It was amazing to see how IL-2 Great Battles graphics and textures evolved over the years.
