Highly coveted in the flight simulation world, the B-17 Flying Fortress is a legendary aircraft and a complicated airplane to simulate. MicroProse, with ample numbers of B-17 products out in other categories, probably make sense as the developer to deliver a Flying Fortress to Microsoft Flight Simulator and it comes to us as part of their Heritage Valor Collection. Let’s have a look.

The Fortress in early access

Features for the MicroProse B-17G include a high fidelity flight model built for MSFS 2024, authentic 3D mode inside and out, 4K PBR textures, fully modelled cockpit, panels and instrumentation as well as realistic Wwise sounds, visible wear and tear, engine vibrations, particle effects and more. This is what the company plans to deliver once complete, however, the product is in early access and so only five of six liveries are available at launch, the flight model is considered an “initial” offering rather than the finished one, and some of the visible wear and tear and vibration features aren’t quite in yet.

The company are offering up a roadmap of what they intend to offer over the course of several updates.

The company are actively courting feedback during early access as well and encouraging people to join their Discord.

If early access doesn’t bother you all that much and you don’t mind being part of the journey towards release, there is a small 17% discount knocking the regular $39.99 USD price down to $32.99 USD.

The aircraft is now available for purchase from the Just Flight webstore.

  1. I picked it up because I really like the B-17 and it’s not bad considering that it’s early. There are some issues with the textures missing in VR, some gauges and switches are of course nonfunctional, but it flies and handles pretty well. I look forward to the updates and development progress as I think this will be one of most popular WWII warbirds brought to MSFS

  2. flying the B-17 in FS is great, but that’s only a small part of the experience, the part that’s missing is dropping bombs and defending the plane against enemy fighters while dealing with engine and control surface damage. It would be cool if it was available in dcs vs warbirds like the 109k.

    1. you can get a lot of the bomber experience in IL-2! 👍

I took an IRL ride in a B-17 and it was wonderful in so many ways.

but as they are IRL, I’ve no real desire to fly combat in a sitting duck like most strategic bombers are.

That would be interesting. Around the time that Great Battles came out, IL-2 1946 got the B-24 player flyable bomber and wow that was quite the experience. Having it in a modern combat sim would be something else, however, its still incredible to see in MSFS.

      1. That was great when they made B-24 , guys who made it would run Hyperloby coops with it, was nice to play. Who knows maybe next GB news is MicroProse sold their model to GB team also

  3. oh, I hand realized this was Sergio’s project(s) until just now! He’s a good dude 🤙

I checked out your interview from last year – good stuff!

I have the old A2A B-17 in P3D. Lovely bird, but not my cup of tea.

I’ll pick this up as it seems fairly well modeled and that history angle is important to me, too.

and, I’m happy to give Sergio’s team some tangible support along the way 😁👍

Sergio is an awesome guy! Introduced me to a ton of folks at the last FSExpo that we both attended in person. Will always be grateful for that and other help and advice over the years. Will definitely be looking into this B-17 project with a review soon as I’m able – big backlog to work through!
