Catching up on a couple of news items surrounding IL-2 Korea. The first one is today’s developer diary that shows off the F-86 Sabre’s cockpit. Its a pre-render but you can see all of the details that have gone into the model and texture work. Then, we go back several days and catch up on the last Brief Room episode where animations take centre stage.
Sabre’s cockpit takes form

The latest focus for the IL-2 Korea dev blog is the F-86 Sabre. We’ve got over a half dozen pre-rendered images of the cockpit’s 3D modeling and texture work coming together. As we’ve seen with previous updates, the process has been to show us the 3D model complete but untextured and then progress towards the fully textured version. We haven’t seen more than a few glimpses of the cockpits in action but I look forward to seeing how they then translate into the engine and how well the materials and texture work stacks up.
The dev blog is focused on working our way around the cockpit understanding each of the controls: switches, dials, knobs and so forth. Read Developer Diary 50 for more individual details and even more screenshots!
Animations Brief Room
This one came out just a little over a week ago but I have, as is typical in the autumn season, been so busy it went right past. The video is interesting because it goes into the animation systems of the sim.
This is a fairly wide topic covering everything from smoke trails from those early jet engines to animating the pilots and ground crew. We’ve known about it for a while but we know, for example, that artillery crew members will be animated and load their guns realistically.
Have a watch if you want to dig into the details.
