The latest DCS World Weekend News has arrived right on schedule and with it we have new information on the status of both DCS: Iraq and Afghanistan.

Both projects move forward with new content, technology

Any time in recent history where Eagle Dynamics has posted an update on DCS: Afghanistan or DCS: Iraq, the comments sections have been filled with “But what about the other map?” and it looks like the solution is to provide status reports for both. Fine by me!

We start with DCS: Iraq. Split into northern and southern sectors. It’s the southern sector that is getting the focus now with the following airports:

  • Kuwait International Airport
  • Ali Al-Salem Airport
  • Jubail naval airport
  • Ras Al-Mishab airport
  • Riffa airbase
  • Sakhir airbase
  • Sakhir Isa airbase
  • Shiraz airport
  • Omidiyah airbase
  • Al-Udeid airbase
  • Prince Sultan airbase

New points of interest include the Bahrain World Trade Center, NBK Tower, the Kuwait Towers, and Stadium 974. Also on the map is the recently in the headlines Kharg Island and its refinery complexes.

Over to DCS: Afghanistan which is similarly picking up new details including the following airports and airbases:

  • Mazar-i-Sharif International
  • Kunduz Airport
  • Fayzabad Airport
  • Sheberghan Airfield
  • Mary International Airport
  • Mary-2

The last two are based in Turkmenistan and were key operation centres during the Soviet-Afghan war.

Eagle Dynamics also reports that they are working on new optimization technology to reduce map sizes without loss of visual quality. That will be welcome news as recent DCS World map projects have become extremely large forcing players to often choose between a handful of maps.

  1. Really enjoy the Iraq map. Looking forward to it heading south. Should make for some great flights.

Indeed! It’s one I don’t have (yet) but the growing range of it does intrigue me!

  2. My question is how long before we actually see this? They have a habit of showing progress that takes months and sometimes years before it’s actually released. I hope sooner, but not holding my breath

It seems to go in two directions. Some updates are long term projects that we see the status of as its in progress and then others are status reports on something that is imminently coming out. I think this is the former rather than the later. Nonetheless, some news is far far far better than no news.
