For the second Friday in a row, we’ve had a major DCS World third party announcement featuring a derivative of Mikoyan’s MiG-23 line-up. Last week, it was Octopus G and the DCS: MiG-27K (a MiG-23 derivative) which is more of a ground attack optimized version of the aircraft. That in itself was a surprise and then along comes word that the MiG-23 is also coming to DCS World. Let’s have a look at the details!

MiG-23M for DCS World

Ugra Media are throwing their hat into the ring of DCS World module development with the announcement that they are now developing a DCS: MiG-23M Flogger. The developer has been known for exclusively map and scenery work for DCS World. They have been previously responsible, in part, for the U-2VS and C-47, and Li-2 in the IL-2 series so this is not technically their first airplane though a full module is something much bigger.

Ugra Media’s goal is to recreate not just how the MiG-23M looks and flies, but how every system on board works, including its real-world limitations, operating modes, and failures. To get there, the team is working from original technical documentation, pilots’ manuals, electrical and hydraulic schematics, factory drawings, and archival photographs and video.

Though this is their first module, the developer obviously has prior DCS World experience and it sounds like they have ambitions to match other developers in the space with quite a high fidelity simulation of this well known Cold War-era fighter and interceptor.

The MiG-23M is an earlier iteration than the one previously under development (and then later stopped) with RAZBAM. This model is slightly slower, though its R-29-300 still gives it one of the fastest acceleration rates of fighters in its generation combined with a high climb rate. Two R-23 missiles (semi-active or IR) along with two or four R-60 IR missiles and a GSh-23L (more “reasonable” than the GSh-6-30A on the MiG-27K) round out its armament. A look-down, shoot-down Sapfir-23D radar and TP-23 IRST round out its sensor suite. The aircraft should find itself right at home in the middle of the Cold War era of jet aircraft providing an interesting adversary for types like the F-4E, F-14A, Mirage F1, and so forth.

As with the Octopus G effort, this appears to be advancing visually but is likely years away from the kind of systems and feature-set that would be required for release. So, excitement is palpable but also tempered as the wait will likely feel long. Still, for fans of Soviet fighters from this era, its reassuring that we’ve finally got a large gap in the aircraft set being eventually plugged by these two swing-wing fighters.

L-39 sale and community video, news

I’ve referenced YouTuber (and 737 pilot) Command T on the blog here before. His comparisons of flight models for Korea IL-2 Series and DCS World reassured me on the overall efficacy of the new sim’s flight model and on its challenges and differences versus DCS World. He’s just released a video (above) that details his experience training to fly an L-39.

Smartly, Eagle Dynamics are offering a flash 40% off sale on the DCS: L-39 for those inspired to go fly it after seeing the video.

This week’s community news continues with a farewell message from the folks at the [4YA] servers. Something I reported on previously.

  1. Really enjoyed that L-39 video. That was great. I’d be happy to grab the Mig-23 but that is probably years off. Too bad.

Yeah definitely years away! Still, I remember when the MiG-29 was but a rumour. And now it’s here. This too will have its time!

    2. Vintorezz is working on a Mig 23 MLA mod that is quite detailed, includes the IRST, Lazur radar, datalink/ground assistance. Look it up on YouTube. Very impressive for a mod.

It’s definitely looking good for a mod. But I worry that it will appear and then disappear like other mod projects.

  2. I wonder if they will announce the 3rd REDFOR aircraft next week…

I’m sure red players will be exited for a new MiG-23 after the Razbam situation.

Yeah I had that thought too. We know there were three… these are likely two of the three so three for three? Possibly!

      What are you hoping for?

      1. I hope for a MiG-25. They were in service with the Ba’athist Iraqi Air Force during the Iraq-Iran War, and the Gulf War. And they are fast!

      2. I REALLY hope for a Su 27, even a early Su27S. But its a tall order, they are complex. Much more so than the Mig 29.

    2. I’d hope for a SU-24. It’s probably not very realistic but I hunk it would be a really fun module. If I’m betting on it I’d say the next one is the FF SU-25, but that Magnitude 3 SU-17 is also an option. They really kept us guessing with this!

I should proofread my comments better.

  3. I am really happy that Ugra Media have decided to do a MiG-23M. I wondr if this is the start of their own line of aircraft modules for DCS?

  4. Hmm this basically rounds out the entire Cold War Soviet fighter line minus the SU-27. The rest remaining are interceptors that were not a part of the VKS and would perform no wartime role like SU-15, and MiG-25/31.

There is the immediately post war MiG-9 that did have historical significance in Communist Chinas battles with ROC forces through the late 50s.

It definitely fills out the collection in a big way! I’m excited how these will eventually fit into the multiplayer scenarios.

    2. While I would appreciate one and definitely buy, there are other planes I would love to see before interceptors. Those arent very fun to fly, its basically just fire one missile and fly away (if that)

  5. I suspect the next redfor announcement will either be the SU-25 FF or less likely the Fitter from Magnitude 3.

What I am more curious about as we head into November. I was pretty convinced the F1M, MiG-17, and Hellcat/Pacific Assets, and Balkans Maps were a lock for release this calendar year. And probably the FC SU-25A update as well. No hints of any of these modules gearing up for EA or release.

My guess would also be ED formally announcing the Su-25 full fidelity. It’s one of those “worst kept secrets” category like the MiG-29 before it.

I figured the MiG-17 was likely for this year. We’ll have to see if it does though it seems close enough.

We’ve heard a lot less about the Hellcat than I expected as well.

  6. well 3 to 5 years from announcement. But im really excited. Hopefully the 3rd aircraft isnt the su25 but something else like the su17. Itd all a good step in the right direction though

I would guess that it was the Su-25 as ED is already midway through the update to the Flaming Cliffs/free Su-25A that they’ve been working on. Transitioning to full module is something they’ve mused about.

But, I was wrong about Octopus G and the Su-17 so what do I know! 🙂

  7. I’m really looking forward to the MiG-23! If Ugra Media is as good at creating modules as they are at making maps, this should turn out great.

Also looking forward to the MiG-27.

As for the third Red Force module, I’d love to see the MiG-25. That would require a more sophisticated GCI, though, one that’s fully voiced.
