Quite possibly the oldest module in DCS World, the Ka-50 Black Shark was in many ways the module that helped build the foundation of what DCS World would ultimately become. Unfortunately for fans of the module, its showing its age and is in need of a serious overhaul. Fortunately, Eagle Dynamics appears to be hard at work on that and we’ve got some new screenshots to look at.
The new Black Shark
The new cockpit appears to be coming along well with an outstanding amount of detail being put into this. The cockpit is possibly where the biggest upgrades are coming as the current one suffers under the new DCS World lighting system. I’m told that some gauges and features are difficult to see or don’t work terribly well – fortunately everything will get a new splash of paint and the module will be brought up to 2.5 standards.
When Eagle Dynamics is done, the Ka-50 should have the same level of polish as their newest modules like the F/A-18C and F-16.
Some upgrades are free for current owners
Cosmetic upgrades to the current Ka-50 model will be entirely free for owners of the current DCS World Black Shark module. New features are also being planned for the Ka-50 with a second block aircraft being added which will give this other Ka-50 variant access to the IGLA air-to-air missile, a missile warning system and a new infrared missile jamming system.
This has caused quite a bit of discussion in the community on if prior owners should get the upgrades free of charge. Eagle Dynamics for their part is offering the upgrade for free but are charging for the new features and I suspect that the new features plus new buyers plus I suspect an upgrade to the overall price of the module in the future will help pay for the work done.
At this point we still don’t know the timing for the new Ka-50 release but with any luck progress will be rapid and we’ll see it later this year.
