Orbx announces TrueEarth Balearic islands for X-Plane 11

Taking a break from U.S. states, Orbx’s TrueEarth Balearic Islands has just been announced as the next in the TrueEarth line for X-Plane 11. These popular vacation destinations are getting the full Orbx treatment. Here’s the details.

Flying vacation

The break from U.S. states is letting Orbx’s scenery team spread their wings and do something different. A popular tourist destination just off the southern coast of Spain, the Balearic Islands are known as a travel destination for vacationers and is particularly well known for its party scene and electronic music. As far as flying goes, the rocky outcrops and sunny skies are likely to be a draw although there are few airports on these islands that I can see.

Here are some of the features that were mentioned in the Orbx announcement:

  • Crisp and highly detailed 60cm/px aerial imagery covering Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and all the smaller surrounding islets
  • Hand-edited texturing with colour corrections to blend seamlessly in the simulator
  • Over 150 POIs covering major hotels, attractions, historical buildings across all the Islands
  • Accurate Spanish themed autogen placed correctly on the aerial imagery at the correct location and height
  • Highly detailed mesh created from 5M LiDAR data brings out stunning detail on the coastlines and mountains
  • Beautiful accurate vegetation matching colour, type and height
  • A fantastic destination for all types of pilots; jet fliers or general aviation fans

The announcement comes with about a dozen screenshots including these.

It’s great that you cover all the flightsims and do it with such a good spirit, but I admit to being curious about why they continue to make in these add-ons given FS2020.

    It does look nice though.

I’m waiting until Flight Simulator is actually out and everyone has had a chance to digest what it is and what it might not be.

No doubt in my mind that MSFS will be hugely popular. I’m also pretty sure X-Plane will continue on and that it’s going to have plenty of fans who will buy these scenery packages up. It should be interesting.

  2. Hi mate,
you just proved with your screenshots, what I meant and commented some days ago on the IL2 forum, when a member suggested ORBX to be integrated in IL2 Great Battles. As long as you fly at high altitudes, everything looks fine, but the closer you get to the ground, the more blocky things get.
All of your screenshots look good, but the two last ones show the problem I have with this terrain rendering method. The objects do not blend well with the rest of the landscape, it looks like low detailed objects tossed onto the map.

      Hey Christopher,

While I quite enjoy the Orbx scenery for X-Plane and an impressed by what MSFS is doing, I whole heartedly agree that it doesn’t work for something like IL-2 or DCS. The low level details aren’t as good and where a civilian simulation of aircraft should have no interaction with the ground outside of an airport, the same is not true for a military sim.

Also, those are official Orbx screenshots. Not mine ☺️

  3. These shots look incredible. I will definitely purchase this pack 😀
