A few new features coming to DCS: F/A-18C

The next patch for DCS World open beta is bringing some new features to the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet including markpoints and the AGM-84K SLAM-ER. Let’s see what’s coming next to the Hornet in DCS.

Markpoints, radar slant range, SLAM-ER

At this point I’m very happy with the overall functionality of the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet, however, the job is not done yet and Eagle Dynamics is working on more functionality for the jet. In an update posted by Matt Wagner we’ve learned that the next updates, most of which are coming in the next patch, include some functionality updates for the jet. They include the addition of markpoints – specially designated points that function similarly to waypoints. Matt Wagner writes,

A markpoint can be created by pressing the MK# OSB in the HSI/SA formats. The number # (1 through 9) indicates exactly which markpoint will be created when the button is pressed and it increments sequentially.

Up to 9 markpoints can be stored at a time, and it’s possible to overwrite them after creating the 9th one (in sequential order).

Upon pressing the MK# button, a markpoint is created at the overfly location if there is no target designation or at the target designation otherwise.

Next up is an air-to-ground ranging mode for the jet called AGR. AGR is activated automatically and offers more precise calculations for targets on the ground including a more accurate indication of the target’s specific altitude.

Not likely to come in the next patch but a handy feature coming later nonetheless is the implementation of GRID/UTM coordinates. Different coordinate entry methods will make it easier to coordinate target positions depending on what the information is presented in. I’m looking forward to having this as an option.

Finally, the AGM-84K SLAM-ER is an enhanced range version of the SLAM with the ability to hit targets at 155 nautical miles with GPS/INS targeting and optional redirection and “man-in-the-loop” guidance. Another versatile weapon for the Hornet.

I guessing that over the winter, if we’re all locked down again, I’ll have time to learn all this stuff with the F-18. I do like that plane!

It is something of a Canadian plane after all 😉

I’m not sure if we’re going into a formal lockdown but I think it’s going to be a long winter nonetheless. Good time to learn some new DCS modules for sure.

Been waiting for the SLAM-ER, even for that cool name alone… With that range I should watch out so it won’t go around the world and hit me from behind 😛
