There’s a change in the air as DCS World 2.7 arrives on the scene replacing DCS World 2.5 which has been with us for a few years now. The 2.5 update was a substantial change to everything that we knew about DCS World and DCS World 2.7 is doing it’s best to try and match that with a feature list that goes on for pages and some substantial updates to key underlying technologies. None moreso than the new cloud technology. 2.7 is here!
New clouds but also so much more
The feature list for DCS World 2.7 (now available in open beta) is substantial. It goes on for quite a long way and that feature list starts with the brand new volumetric cloud technology. That technology introduces volumetric clouds for the first time into DCS World with all manners of multi-layer clouds, multiple cloud types, formations, and all of the appropriate shading and lighting changes that come along with that.
This is phase one of a multi-part effort that will eventually bring in more accurate weather modeling as well as detailed modeling of how weapons and sensors may be affected by the clouds and weather. Notably, that kind of modeling is a step above anything we’ve seen so what we’re seeing today is just the first (dramatic) step on the road towards that.
Enough about clouds as there’s other things to think about. The new update also brings in substantial changes to weapons such as the AGM-88 HARM, the R-27 and several other weapons which have been tweaked and revised. Aircraft like the F/A-18C and F-16C have several dozen updates each and third party aircraft like the AV-8B, JF-17, AJS-37 and F-14 have all seen updates and fixes. Maps have also been updated and Ugra Media were busy with DCS: Syria as there are 6 new airfields, new terraces and scenery objects, and they have improved the maps performance too.
So, as we sometimes say here. “There’s quite a bit, eh!”
Enjoy the trailer while you patch
DCS Word 2.7 launches with an appropriately spectacular trailer showcasing the new technology further and it’s worth a watch a few dozen times while the patch process is being completed.
Oh and there’s a sale too!
Hyped yet? Eagle Dynamics have also dropped their latest Spring Sale starting today with 50% off most modules on the DCS World eStore. The sale lasts until May 2nd so you have a chance to think before you make your decision.
Stay tuned for more right here
The patch process is still running here but I am looking forward to digging into DCS World 2.7 over the next couple of days and putting together my reaction on this major step change for the series. Exciting times ahead!
