The latest developer diary for IL-2: Great Battles Series is out and its loaded with essential details about the series and what’s coming next too. There’s also a new sale out and a great new video has been released to show off how to make use of the new GAZ anti-aircraft truck. Let’s dig into all of it!
New Normandy objects
The latest on the Battle of Normandy project kicks off with some objects that will support the latest expansion to the Great Battles Series. About a dozen screenshots have been released including the six below that show off a variety of objects including 20mm and Flak 38 105 flak guns, trucks, new bunkers, barrage balloons, light armored vehicles, and a variety of landing craft.
Battle of Normandy is very clearly going to be able to show off the Normandy invasion in a credible way if these objects are anything to go by! The detailing is also excellent and really shows the series taking a few more steps forward on their ground detailing. It looks fantastic!
We also have news that the Typhoon Mark IB is nearly ready and will be coming in the next patch – scheduled sometime for mid June.
Fokker D.VIII work in progress
Ugra Media meanwhile is plugging away on the model and texture work on the Fokker D.VIII and this week we get to see this aircraft in-engine and seemingly nearly ready to go. Also, is that a new propeller effect or is my mind playing tricks on me?
The Fokker D.VIII is unique for the era in that it’s a monoplane and although it had a much less powerful engine than the D.VII, it still managed an impressive 207 km/h top speed. This should be an interesting aircraft to fly! It is slated to come in the next patch alongside the Typhoon.
GAZ-MM 72-K video and Steam store release
The GAZ-MM is the first of its kind in the series. A truck that you can drive and then make full use of the AA gun mounted on the back. I’m still gaining some time with the truck before I write a full review but one of the things that will help both me and you out with this vehicle is a tutorial and an excellent new tutorial has been put together (and shouted out by the 1CGS dev team) by none other than Requiem of the Air Combat Tutorial Library.
And if you want to buy the GAZ-MM 72-K, the pre-order discount will be around for another week according to this developer diary. It’s also been added to the Steam store so you’ll be able to pick it up and buy it there if you were waiting on that to happen.
Sd.Kfz. 10/5 Flak 38 coming this summer
If you were waiting for the German answer to the GAZ-MM 72-K to appear, you won’t have to wait too much longer as the Sd.Kfz. 10/5 Flak 38 is apparently planned to come by mid summer.
In a post on the IL-2 forum, Jason Williams, the series Lead Producer, reported the news:
It’s in development and will be released this summer.

It’ll be great to have the German counterpart to the GAZ in the sim.
