A new video by Eagle Dynamics Matt Wagner provides an in-depth tutorial on all of the uses and functions of the DCS: F/A-18C’s air-to-air radar. It’s what you might consider ‘required reading’ for Hornet pilots looking to get the most out of the module and the tutorial provides all kinds of details that, even I as a frequent Hornet pilot, did not fully know about.
Getting to know the radar
I really appreciate in-depth tutorials like these directly from Eagle Dynamics and from Matt Wagner. His no-nonsense style and in-depth knowledge make learning the intricacies of this system relatively easy. The 17 minute video may be a bit longer than the usual but the video represents a complete overview and tutorial on how to use all of the different aspects of the radar system.
There have been patches where the radar has been buggy and there have been patches where it’s worked well – perhaps too well. Now, we have something that is close or at what Eagle Dynamics considers a final state. Matt’s video goes a long way towards aiding understanding on why you may or may not be able to lock up your target.
This video is likely in response to some of the difficulties that people are having mastering the system. But, with a little added knowledge, it seems like most of the challenges can be combated.
I’m happy to have videos like this that spell it out as simply as possible. There was a movie where the guy said, “Explain it to me as if I were a small child, or a Golden Retriever.”
That works for me.

Simple and straightforward. I agree. I think this is a good format and Matt Wagner does it extremely well.

He’s got the smooth golden voice. He’s the Celine Dion of tutorials.
Not sure how he’d take that, though.
