AMRAAM, Mi-24 pilot, FLIR and AH-64D updates from Eagle Dynamics

A few updates from Eagle Dynamics from this Friday’s update focused primarily on the AH-64D’s progress as well as a note about AMRAAM development. Let’s have a look!

AH-64D and FLIR updates

This week we get some new screenshots and a detailed overview of the AH-64D’s Target Acquisition and Designation Sight (TADS). We’ve seen this in action in the recent Matt Wagner training video and its a both an update of what the AH-64D for DCS World will be able to offer as well as a showcase for DCS World’s updated FLIR rendering.

The DCS: AH-64D TADS FLIR camera is also being developed to showcase our new FLIR rendering technology that will provide a much improved and more realistic portrayal of the world as seen through infrared. This same technology will also be used for other FLIR sensors in DCS targeting pods such as the infrared-guided Maverick missiles.

FLIR has been critiqued as being inadequate to find targets with many objects displaying bright signatures on DCS’s various FLIR implementations that shouldn’t report as being hot. A tree shouldn’t show up with the same signature as a tank that is powered up for example. Eagle Dynamics are making efforts to improve that technology and some folks have already noted that textures on various objects in DCS World 2.7 open beta releases already have some of the layers necessary for this technology in place.

Hind pilot model

The pilot model for the DCS: Mi-24P Hind is getting an update. Various screenshots showing the intense levels of detail as well as a near finished product are on display this week.

AMRAAM lethality being worked on

We’ve seen several updates to the AIM-120 AMRAAM by Eagle Dynamics over the last several months with the popular missile in DCS World servers seeing some significant changes and increases to the modeling detail. That has seen the missile jump up and down a bit on the lethality scale. ED has explained that they continue to work on the modeling with the aim of making the weapon more accurate.

Thank you for your continued patience and support since the initial release of the updated AMRAAM model. This sophisticated weapon has demanded quite deep remodelling and debugging and we found several issues in the missile velocity search and tracking algorithms. We have also made substantial improvements to HOJ and visual modes. The next stages of development are realistic range gating modelling to enhance the missile’s onboard radar to contend with strong ground clutter returns.

I appreciate the continued quest for more accuracy in modeling and a more detailed model of this critical weapon for many aircraft in the sim. No doubt this will have spillover effects for other similar type active radar weapons like the R-77 and SD-10.

Check out all of this and more in the latest DCS World Weekend update.

I heard that EA is going to replace the pilot model not only for the Hind, but for the entire line of Russian helicopters and airplanes, in the early part of the new year.
