DCS: AH-64D coverage round-up! (updated)

The DCS: AH-64D hype has been going for months now and it hasn’t slowed down at all with the release of the module as the whole DCS community is checking out the newest module. I’ve not seen such excitement for a long time and its great to see. There’s a ton of content to check out if you’re trying to get to grips with the new helicopter or if you’re just wanting to see what’s out there. Here’s a round-up of some great content!

Update: March 19 at 9:45 pm EST with even more content

Missions in the dark, tutorials to light your way

I have to start with my community coverage round-up with CasmoTV. Casmo has been a significant contributor to getting us the AH-64D for DCS thanks to his real world experience flying the helicopter. Eagle Dynamics made special mention of him over on Twitter.

CasmoTV, his YouTube channel, has a ton of DCS AH-64D content including tutorials for the gun, Hellfire missiles, rockets and more. He’s also doing some good mission content so you can see all of those techniques in practice. Check out his latest, ‘Own the Night’ to see what flying the helicopter is all about.

Eagle Dynamics own Matt Wagner is also still producing new content for the helicopter and I really want to highlight the two latest videos because I think they are going to be immensely useful for new pilots. First, ‘Launch Day Questions’ covers some misconceptions, confusing operations, and plenty of walking through the motions to get a handle on this helicopter.

In Matt’s second video, he talks about ‘VRS and Settle with Power’ which are two helicopter concepts that you might want to know about. I’ve spent the last couple of years learning to be a sim helicopter pilot and they are not easy to get to know even if you have thousands of sim hours with fixed wing aircraft. Helicopters are a whole different beast and the AH-64D has its own quirks too!

RedKite, who attracted plenty of attention with his recent Mirage F1 tutorial and preview, also has some great AH-64D content. His TSD Manual Waypoints and Routes tutorial cover manually setting waypoints which I always find to be useful. Done with RedKite’s non-nonsense style!

Tactical Pascale has a great video tutorial on George AI that you may want to check out.

104th_Maverick also has an AH-64 video out called “An Idiots Guide to Firing Hellfires with George” and that may be just the ticket for me to get a handle on the weapon. Maybe it will work for you too!

There’s even more content, live streaming, and more going on but hopefully this round-up gets you started!

What a leaning curve! And what a fat ton of buttons and switches to map. Thank god for Voice Attack. I’ve got the six or seven steps to getting the gun to fire and range automatically on one voice command. “Guns”. Need the help to ease my poor brain.

But it’s still a lot of fun getting all this together. One small accomplishment after another.

Thanks Shamrock. This really is a solid module, I’m loving it so far. I’ve taken a different route from learning the systems and weaponry. Instead I’ve been focusing on the takeoff, hover, flight characteristics, and landing. Mainly though the focus has been learning the force trim. While I didn’t find the force trim intuitive at the beginning, I’m now entering the regime of growing comfortable with it.
With the trim system, I believe they’ve done the best implementation possible given the challenges of simulating non spring stick and pedals.
      Bravo ED.
