Microsoft Flight Simulator and the team at Asobo have teamed up with Paramount Pictures for their impending release of Top Gun: Maverick. Here’s the latest on what we know of the DLC.
Top Gun action
Delayed many times on account of the pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick is finally coming to movie theatres on May 24th. In what is surely going to be an action packed ride, the new movie features returning star Tom Cruise and a cast of younger pilots that are recruited for a combat mission.
Some critics have already had an early look at the movie and I’ve heard some pretty good things so hopefully this is a worthy successor to a classic movie. With a focus on practical effects, I suspect that this should at least be a visually impressive thrill ride. We’ll see what else it has in store.
This is the latest trailer released about a month ago advertising the new release date.
Microsoft and Asobo teamed up with Paramount Pictures to produce a free DLC package for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The first piece of that puzzle, the F/A-18E Super Hornet (mistakenly labelled E/F on the description), is already in the sim and recent sim updates have added some features to it. More, however, is on the way.
Carriers and more?
Last year we learned that Asobo were bringing their own Supercarrier to MSFS as part of the free DLC together with the Hornet, a special Maverick themed livery, and possibly few other surprises.
There are rumours that the sim will be including the Darkstar. This is fictional aircraft that the film features as a test aircraft but it has some interesting real world grounding being based on a design that the movie-makers built together with Lockheed’s Skunk Works. They even built a full scale mock-up as part of the movie production process. The War Zone has a great article about how that came together.
Jorg reported in the last Q&A that a trailer is coming soon so we’ll be looking out for that.
The film looks awful. And wonderful.
BTW, the Rhinos are almost always termed ‘E/Fs’ in Boeing releases and in trade press so the developers were likely following suit. ‘Growlers’ get a separate designation.

Free DLC is my favourite DLC. And I’m happy to have a working carrier in MSFS.
Haven’t watched the trailer, I avoid trailers, they show too much.
