Polychop shows off OH-58D video

DCS World third party developers Polychop have just released a 10-minute video showing off the current state of the DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. Let’s have a look!

A work in progress

The OH-58D worked its way into a few different sections of the DCS World 2023 and Beyond video release at the start of the year which brought the scout helicopter back to the foreground for many of us hoping to see it release.

This module has had a complicated development cycle with periods of public activity and media releases and then some long silences. Those silences have naturally caused quite a bit of concern over what the status of the project was. A 10-minute video with the helicopter in operation goes at least some of the way towards making us looking in from the outside feel confident that this module is on its way.

The video gives us a short flight and a couple of strafing runs on a target range with the side mounted .50cal. There is a caution out there that sounds are work in progress and that is probably no more evident than with the .50cal so let’s treat that one gently for now and we’ll wait to hear a more final example later on.

One cool feature, midway through, was the adjustment of the painted on gunsight. This is more of a gameplay/quality of life feature that lets you align that with your eye. I think it’s really cool.

Have a look at the video!

Hard not to notice they never looked around the cockpit. Too bad. But it does look good.

      Yeah, just a static view.

The person who created the video apparently normally plays in VR and it seems like they don’t have any camera movement at all without it. Odd choice but we’ve seen other parts of the cockpit previously so I’m assuming it’s not too much of an issue. My fingers are crossed!

I’m really looking forward to this. I quite like the Gazelle, and I found the Apache not quite for me as the complexity and George are a bit of a hump I haven’t had the patience to learn. Also, the Apache is a bit of a tank, when it comes to handling. From what I’ve heard, the Kiowa is a lot more nimble.

On a different topic, looks like they opened up the DCS Multi threading beta for general use:

Shamrock is not allowed to sleep or eat, only drink, until we get an article. And to add a touch of stress to the mix, Deephack’s DCS podcast is tomorrow and he often quotes this site on his show.

      type… type… type…

That assumes any of us are going to be sleeping much for the next several days 🙂

On the other hand, I may not get much DCS time. The youngest has been sick with an ear infection, and can be quite vocal when she is not happy with life…
