The DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior has just released for DCS World and this long awaited scout helicopter is finally here with a wide range of systems and quite a bit of community interest too. Let’s have a look!

Ready for action

It feels like ages ago now when Polychop formally announced the DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior for DCS World. It turns out that was back in 2019 and since then the module has been developed into a releasable product with Polychop forgoing the usual early access model and instead releasing with all features ready to go.

Licensed by Bell Textron, the OH-48D for DCS World represents a later model of the Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter. The type was used in operations with the US Army from 1988 through to 2017 when it was formally retired..

The module incorporates a detailed flight model, high resolution textures inside and out, mast mounted sight with TV, FLIR cameras and laser range finder, data link system for Kiowa to Kiowa messaging, missile warning system, moving map system, night vision capable, and more.

The full slate of available OH-58D weapons including M3P machine gun, 2.75″ rockets, AGM-114K Hellfire anti-tank missile, APKWS laser guided rockets, FIM-92 stinger, and it even has the handheld M4 rifle with VR controller support.

60-liveries are also packaged with the module.

The module is launching without early access and is considered a complete product. It also thus has no pre-order incentives and is available for $69.99 USD from the DCS World E-Shop and on Steam.

  1. Great to see this finally making it to DCS – often something that takes this long and has so many ups and downs don’t see the light of day so bravo to the team on making it happen. Seems like Casmo was impressed so that’s a fine testament to the quality of the product.

I will eventually buy it but got my hands full with the Phantom!

Casmo did seem very impressed and I’ve heard lots of good things about it. I’m not rushing to it either as I’m just overwhelmed with content but I am going to cover it very soon!

Hi Chris. Yeah I saw that video. It’s unfortunately been used as evidence of it being a bad module by a few in the community. Reportedly the issue has already been fixed in dev. Stuff like this comes up.

      3. That is why I am looking forward to your review. Your reviews are very balanced.

May I share an observation regarding helicopters in DCS?

When swapping from a TM16000 with spring to a TM16000 without spring.

flight in the Huey became so much easier to control, however in the Gazelle it became a lot

        more difficult to control it.

Thanks Chris! I will be writing a review eventually though it may be a little ways out but it is definitely coming.

I can’t explain the control issue. That is interesting. If it is like the Gazelle there can be a fair bit of twitchiness that different control and control setups can make useful or into something difficult to fly. Have you tried some curves on the axis controls?

  3. Thoroughly enjoying the Kiowa. This is how a launch should go. Kudos to Polychop on a job well done.
