The DCS World videos focused on new features continue to flow and Matt Wagner is back again, the third time in just the last week, this time to talk about the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet and some new features coming to that module. Here’s what we’ve learned not just about terrain avoidance but some other upcoming features.

Terrain avoidance and MSI

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet hasn’t really been in the headlines for quite a long time. Eagle Dynamics rendition of the legacy Hornet model moved out of early access quite a while ago though detractors have mentioned that there were still some features that the jet lacks – not surprising given the depth and complexity of the Hornet.

The headline new feature sis the new Terrain Avoidance Radar Mode. The feature uses the radar to paint the terrain up ahead and let you know if you’re likely to crash into or are going to avoid the terrain ahead. Great for low level in low visibility.

Matt also indicates to us that the aircraft will also get the multi-sensor integration or MSI feature. AWACS fed track files will be able to be set to “LNS” or “DT2” and the aircraft will be able to track and engage aircraft without the aircraft’s own radar emitting. Stealthy AIM-9 and AIM-120 engagements will be possible using this system. Look for that to come soon.

  1. Any Hornet love is good love. And it will be pretty sweet if there is a patch this Friday. 🙂

  2. This MSI sounds very interesting, is that something the F-16C can also do? or might get? any other aircraft that could benefit from this MSI integration?

I’m not sure. There’s been quite a bit of cross pollination between the F-16 and F/A-18 from a core technology standpoint. I don’t know if the F-16 Block 50 that we have had a similar capability not yet modeled or no. But I imagine if it did, that this would come over in some capacity.

Ha! Ha! I only just learned how to get the thing off the ground!!
I think, by the time I actually notice and USE this feature I’ll prob’ly be another year older!!

Should be pretty simple: slap some JDAMs on, set the time to midnight and have at it!

Fit your NVGs and keep the weather clear so you can match what the radar shows you vs what you can see in the NVG’s.

THEN once you’re comfortable, turn on the clouds or rain 🙂

Should be fine, Hornet almost flies itself 😉

It’s a superb module. You’ll be able to have lots of fun with this one.

I think MY problem is that I keep going from one plane to another, depending on what day it is and how I feel. Therein lies my downfall as far as mastering one plane over another.
I’m absolutely fine with ‘analogue’ planes like the WW2 ones but when it comes to the planes with all dem BUTTONS to press?!!
Head-down and give it a few days on one I suppose. Trouble is, with a raisin-like brain such as MY old friend up there, I might as well have been out gardening when I leave that plane alone for a week or so!!

I hear that. I have the same problem and it comes with the same issue for me where I don’t fully learn most modules. The F/A-18 is the closest to having one that I know through and through – still some things I don’t know but I’ve put many hours into it. Loved every minute of it!
