The DCS World videos focused on new features continue to flow and Matt Wagner is back again, the third time in just the last week, this time to talk about the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet and some new features coming to that module. Here’s what we’ve learned not just about terrain avoidance but some other upcoming features.
Terrain avoidance and MSI
DCS: F/A-18C Hornet hasn’t really been in the headlines for quite a long time. Eagle Dynamics rendition of the legacy Hornet model moved out of early access quite a while ago though detractors have mentioned that there were still some features that the jet lacks – not surprising given the depth and complexity of the Hornet.
The headline new feature sis the new Terrain Avoidance Radar Mode. The feature uses the radar to paint the terrain up ahead and let you know if you’re likely to crash into or are going to avoid the terrain ahead. Great for low level in low visibility.
Matt also indicates to us that the aircraft will also get the multi-sensor integration or MSI feature. AWACS fed track files will be able to be set to “LNS” or “DT2” and the aircraft will be able to track and engage aircraft without the aircraft’s own radar emitting. Stealthy AIM-9 and AIM-120 engagements will be possible using this system. Look for that to come soon.
