IL-2 Series Korea transitions from early access to full release on August 4th and 1CGS seem to be very busy making sure that the new sim addresses some of its teething issues ahead of that moment. Update 0.004 is now out and available and it comes with some notable improvements across the board – but none stand out more to me than the AI changes. Let’s have a look.

Getting ready for launch?

IL-2 Series Korea is probably my most flown sim at the moment. Its fresh, its new, and there’s quite a bit to dig into. Especially now that we have the Career commander mode which I’m finding quite interesting. But it does have some rough edges and it is still technically in “early access” for a few more days.

Update 0.004 fixes game crashes, interface issues, made minor changes to the career, camera, and control systems. Aircraft are particularly big on the update list with fixes for the F-86, La-11, F-80, IL-10 and more generic fixes as well such as how the aircraft behave when ditching in the water.

But few grabbed my attention like the length list of updates for AI aircraft. 1CGS have reportedly made fixes to target tracking, rocket guidance including on targets near mountain peaks, fixed calculation distance for pulling out of a dive, improved ground target selection and search priorities, adjusted parameters for G-load, airspeed, and Mach number related maneuvring, as well as adjustments to target tracking.

That’s more AI updates than we’ve seen for years under Great Battles. It gives me a bit of hope that IL-2 Series will be able to shake the shackles of an AI system that hasn’t really ever lived up to the rest of the product. Remains to be seen if these changes are all that are planned or if there’s more to come. And we’ll have to see how these are in action.

For now, check out the change log here.

The F86 is now (even without the cheat RPM Limiter) coldstartable and can pull far more G than before. Gone are the days where a slight stickmovement would dismount the wings. They really did their homework. The Patch from last week fixed the wrong landinggearanimation as well, so we can finally say the sabre is qualitywise at the same level as the mig15 is. That was the best part for me of the recent updates 🙂

That’s good news! I’ve not flown it in the new patch yet so I’m very encouraged by that.

welp, considering AI seems to have been the No 1 complaint, this is highly encouraging!

First, I hate to admit it and second I know it’s not for everyone but I actually like the Career Mode. I just knew I wasn’t going to like that Commander thing but since yesterday my wife has actually had to drag me away from the game. As soon as I finish this post I’m headed back to the gaming computer. Also, the visuals are fantastic! Is it perfect? No, but what is.

    1. Great to know Career is enjoyable. It is my go to mode on this sim from day 1. It is been like that for IL-2 BoX as well as multiplayer have become too…. predictable.

Hard to believe but the career on BoX has been more engaging than a multiplayer server for a while, for me at least. I bet folks who jump in with a 2 to 5 stack has a complete other opinion than me. But hey, not everyone has a bunch of flight sim buddies who can jump in multiplayer at similar times.

Career/campaign mode is a must for current combat sims.

      1. I’ve got all the Great Battles and Career is the only way I played. I’m an ancient old fart and I really don’t want to match reflexes with young guys. Anyway, this new Commander feature in Career I thought would be a big bummer but once I figured it out, which wasn’t long, I kind of like it. Like I mentioned the visuals are a big step above Great Battles at least to me.

      2. I still have my reflexes up, am relatively young and I think it is a good taste at being interested in a robust Career mode rather than being a mode where things are “slower”. It is not that different. I prefer it nowadays. Chilling escorting big bomber formations, being in a wild furball, encountering all kinds of plane types and not just the meta.

That being any time of day, not only on the prime hours, is quite priceless.

In multiplayer, reflexes doesn’t matter much either, where the main factor it asks you is situational awareness rather. That is a slow and methodical skill. Approach and shooting for a kill doesn’t take that much of reaction speed. Either for reacting getting shot.

I think you’d be surprised to what you can do given enough practice is done. 🙂 Keep it in mind.

What is tough on multiplayer are the 2 to 5 stacks in comms while you’re alone. That, no amount of reflexes will save you.

  5. Have they said anything about the bombers expansion for IL-2 Great Battles? I recall that was also supposed to be coming out this quarter?

Nothing recently. Waiting to hear when early access will begin. That may happen after the 4th when Korea moves into full release.

Good summary! LOL now if only they could retrofit Great Battles and Flying Circus with some of those AI improvements!

I wish! I’m not sure if we’ll see any cross pollination but maybe!
