DCS World third party developer Octopus G has largely wrapped up work on the WWII era DCS: La-7 project and has started to tease a new project with a video release that came out today. Let’s have a look at the tease, what we’ve seen from the developer in the past, and what might be on the horizon. Let’s speculate!

Mystery module reveal soon?

A new YouTube video, titled “OGt,” shows a low level run through DCS World’s Caucasus map with a pilot’s heavy breathing indicating some fast and high G turns and banks through the rugged terrain. The aircraft flies over a Bradley IFV and a mobile Vulcan air defense unit before looping up, over, and down onto the presumed target. The end of the video shows the Octopus G logo and a whooshing jet sound briefly heard.

The appearance of the video likely means that some sort of reveal is on its way and that we may learn about a new DCS World module soon.

Speculation time!

Back in 2022, Octopus G showed off some early renders and a video showing off a Sukhoi Su-17 or Su-22. The video has since been removed but my article about it at the time still exists. The renderings appeared well advanced though the project obviously took a back seat to the La-7 project that was well underway. The video today immediately takes me back to that project and the possibility

Now, however, it does seem like the developer is possibly back on the job and using the skills and expertise developed over prior projects to bring a new project forward. We don’t know for sure if its still the Su-17/22 project from before but its a good guess. With the love-affair that the DCS World community has with Cold War era jets, a REDFOR fighter-bomber might be very well regarded. It could also be some other project. We’ll have to see but it does appear to be a new project and one with a jet engine from Octopus G. More to come!

  1. That sure is one of the teasers of all time…

    1. My understanding is that Octopus G is mostly a solo dev who handles everything including the marketing. I give those kinds of devs a fair bit of leeway versus larger ones that have more resources to do some marketing.

Su22, could be, yes. My first thought was even Su24, because auf the low level flying.

Well, let’s see what it turns out to be 🙂

    1. That’d be very cool too. Su-17/22 and Mig-27 are the two most repeated guesses. We’ll see it!

  3. The Su-22 would be an interesting module and fill a niche in REDFOR.

      • We already have a superbly crafted SU-22M4 module in DCS from VintoreZ.

In the current paradigm, a mod is still going to struggle to gain acceptance across a wide array of multiplayer servers. So far, only the A-4 has really gained that level of adoption.

A payware project with an Su-22 or Su-17 would likely garner more interest across a wider array of players and experiences.

That’s not to dismiss the work done by modders or VintoreZ either. But that is how things have been going for decades of DCS modding.

  5. I hope it will be the Su-17/22 that was teased to us years ago. It sure would give the Warsaw Pact another plane in their inventory on the German Cold War map.

    1. My best guess is is still on the Su-17/22. Some in the community think its a MiG-27. Either way… I think we’ll be in for something interesting.
