DCS: Normandy 2 releases, WWII fighters go on sale

It’s Friday and that means its DCS World Weekend News time. This week the big news is that Ugra Media’s DCS: Normandy 2 map is out. There’s also a WWII fighter sale and 4YA Project Overlord is hosting a big WWII multiplayer mission. Let’s check it out!

Normandy 2 is out

The big news is that DCS: Normandy 2 is out and this new map by Ugra Media has now replaced the original DCS: Normandy 1944 map. The new map is 2.4 times larger, uses the latest map technology, and contains two major cities (London and Paris) together with plenty of detail in the old areas too.

Early access for the map brings the price down from $59.99 to $47.99 USD. If you happen to own The Channel or the original Normandy 1944 then you can upgrade to the new map for $14.99 USD. If you happen to own both The Channel and Normandy 1944 then you get the new map for $9.99 USD. Eagle Dynamics says these are limited time offers so beware that these deals will not be available indefinitely.

Even better, if you don’t upgrade but previously have Normandy 1944, you’ll still benefit by receiving upgrades to the parts of the map that you previously had access to. The rest of the map will be there too but lacking in the detail.

It’s a complex thing to get through but this seems to be the best way to bring everyone forward while extending the experience for those who wish to upgrade.

In-case you missed them, I have done two previews of the map with a focus on England and London in the first and Normandy and Paris in the second.

Read the DCS: Normandy 2 FAQ here and check out the product on the DCS World e-Shop here.

If you happen to get a note that you already own the product when you go to purchase – everyone else is having that one too.

DCS WWII discounts

Eagle Dynamics is offering 50% off discounts on all DCS WWII fighters until the 21st of May. That means the Spitfire IX, P-47D, P-51D, Bf109K-4, Fw190A-8, and Fw190D-9 are all on sale.

4YA Project Overlord mission

The folks at 4YA servers are hosting a special event on their Project Overlord server. They are seeking to recreate a historic B-17 raid on Paris from the 20th of May 1944. 90 players are expected to participate with the Allies escorting the bombers and the Axis intercepting the bombers.

They are encouraging people to join their Discord for more info.

It’s very good so far. I haven’t flown over London or Paris yet, that’s for tonight with a shot of whiskey by the flightstick, but so far the texture improvement alone is worth the price of admission. I paid $20 on Steam but I thought it would be about $15 since I own all the maps, but I won’t cry over $5 if the result is a improved eye candy.

Really looking forward to cruising the big cities tonight. Be fun to check performance, how it all runs with different planes and choppers, and I really want to see the night lighting. The City of Lights is something I want to see.

  2. If you are running the multi-threaded version of DCS Open Beta, be advised that you need to run the updater at “DRIVE_LETTER:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\bin\DCS_updater.exe” as running the multi-threaded bin file directly at “DRIVE_LETTER:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\bin-mt\DCS.exe” will not launch the updater.

Was confused about that for a bit and thought I’d share!

I am also getting the message that I already have the map when attempting to purchase. Will wait a bit to see if they fix that or for someone to confirm you need to buy it to be able to see all the new stuff in the Open Beta version.

    Thanks, Shamrock!

Great info! Thanks for sharing that.

I assume that they will have some of the quirks in the system all fixed up soon.

Loving it so far. I can (almost) see my house. I decided which building was roughly in the closest looking street to where I live then fired a brace of FFARs into it. just for the lols, as da kidz might say. I was impressed with how well my home burned. Probably a result of all the junk I haven’t thrown out from computer upgrades.

There seems to be some trouble with Steam installs. I thought I had Normandy 2 but maybe I just have Normandy 1 with some new textures. Hard to figure out. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Oh that’s interesting. So you’ve installed the terrain but you’re not getting the new areas?

Another site advises there IS a glitch with the Steam install, and asks you to be patient, don’t know when it’ll get sorted

I’m hearing that from a few different sources.

One person has told me they resolved it with a little graphics setting reset but I don’t know if that will work for all.

There is a “quick” fix that worked for me and others, it’s on the DCS forums. The map looks great now.
