Always love to see what Team Fusion Simulations is up to and with recent updates talking about their project we’ve seen plenty of work in progress efforts for the next entry in the series. Today, however, we’re looking at a different kind of video that is more showcase of accomplishments sprinkled with a few sneak peeks. Let’s have a look!

Headlining features, teases for the future

A great new video has come out from Team Fusion showing off the progress so far for the IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover series. Headlining features include the two historical scenarios (Cliffs of Dover Blitz and Desert Wings Tobruk), 40+ aircraft, single and multiplayer, virtual reality (marked as coming soon), new visual effects including 4K textures, an overhaul of the Channel Map and the TrueSky weather update.

If you wanted a quick overview of the series in a short video, this is a good one to watch.

  1. Not flown with CoD for a good while, but still looking forward to all the new planes and features for the future… so much going on in the flight sim world at the moment so lot’s to be going on with in the meantime.

  2. Once VR is implemented, I will give it a go. I think a few more will also try it then.

  3. I feel like IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover should also be released on GOG.

  4. Those planes are looking better then the BoX planes. What are your experiences whit this game when being compared to BoX.

It’s a mixed bag with no clear winner. Cliffs of Dover aircraft have some deeper damage modeling and systems than their Great Battles equivalent. Graphically I found earlier iterations to have fallen behind though TFS are working hard to bring it up to standard with higher resolution textures, revamped map technology, and new cloud tech.

The biggest downfall is the GUI which is probably among the worst around. TFS inherited it from the original product so its not “their fault” but it also needs to be ultimately dealt with.

It continues to have strong potential!

    2. Visually, I think Cliffs does have better detail in places.

My main gripe is the relatively slow pace of development making it difficult to maintain interest. Since Team Fusion partnered with 1CGS back in 2016, the game only received one major addition (Desert Wings – Tobruk). In that time BoX has received 7 major expansions and roughly 70 new aircraft and 6 maps.

Furthermore, it will soon be compared against the upcoming next-gen product from 1CGS (presumably set in Korea).

      1. Agree with the slow pacing. They’re a small team that only works during spare time. Not only do they need modellers but they also need people for the maps. The map work is actually relatively simple and someone who has even a decent knowledge of the Full Mission Builder should have absolutely no problem with map work. There are some more difficult areas that senior map builders will tackle while the newbies work on the simpler parts. For the planned TF 9.0 installment that will cover Eastern England to Western Germany from 1942-44, basically what Masters of the Air covers, there needs to be more people willing to join the map team if they want it released in a timely manner.

  5. One of the biggest problems in this sim is the unrealistic AI. From Shamrock’s own Aug 2020 review:

“It’s also frustratingly annoying at times where the AI can out roll or out maneuver a human player flying the same aircraft because their flight model just isn’t the same. I have had some great dogfights against this AI system and then also had a few that I was genuinely annoyed at when the target ahead of me flick rolled away like no human could ever do.”

Team Fusion says they’ll fix this with the next version (6.0), but until they do, I’m not interested in flying against AI.

Yeah the AI has generally been the downfall there. It surprised me a bit because some in the community had suggested that the Cliffs of Dover AI was better than the Great Battles AI and I found it to be worse. Neither was great, infact no sim I’ve experienced has had great AI, but certainly there were some big issues with the Cliffs of Dover system. I do hope that they are able to tackle that one day… elements of the AI are very good but other elements need tuning to be sure.
