You read that right. A new update from 1C Game Studios indicates that Volume IV of the Flying Circus series is going to be released soon. The entire thing, all at once. It includes a bunch of new aircraft as well as some updates that affect the whole of the series including the addition of Paris to the Western Front map. Let’s have a look!

Seven new planes, Paris, more

Seven new airplanes are coming to the Flying Circus hangar with the new Volume IV release intended to come out soon. Unlike with prior releases, this is an all at once release with all seven airplanes being released at the same time.

The aircraft list remains the previously announced following types:

  • British Sopwith Pup fighter
  • British rear-engine fighter Airco DH.2
  • British two-seat reconnaissance Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
  • British two-seat reconnaissance Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter B
  • German fighter Albatros D.III
  • German Fokker E.III monoplane fighter
  • German two-seat reconnaissance Roland C.IIa

There’s some interesting airplanes in there including the unique Airco DH.2, the infamous Eindecker, and classic Sopwith 1½ Strutter.

The Western Front map, shared between all volumes, is getting an update with this release too. New villages and towns have been added, there are new industrial zones, new airfields and they have decided to add Paris to the mix too. That’s cool!

Other updates

Though not too specific on what’s changing, we’ve also learned that this update will have updates for the entire series. Updates to career mode will bring new mission types which is always welcome. We’ve also learned that the Tempest flight model is being adjusted. What that looks like in practice we’ll have to wait and see.

  3. I am also glad that they are still continuing with Great Battles and Flying Circus. I am also glad that they are doing Paris as well. Hopefully one day the city can be incorporated into the Normandy map.

Question. Do you think that there will be a Flying Circus Vol. V? I’ve heard that people really want a Channel map so there is the demand for another Flying Circus. Maybe they could incorporate London and have Zeppelin bombers to raid British cities (don’t mean to sound insensitive). I think the issue is with this is that the developers might want to invest more in the new IL-2 series. I’m still curious to hear what you think.

    1. I’d love to see them refurbish The Channel map! It’s familiar turf but the WWI era of it makes it a bit unique.

Will they do it? I suspect not as they’ve indicated a desire to move on and I think with Volume IV they’ve reached the end of the road in terms of what the plans were for the product. Never say never but I think this may be it.

      1. They could always just continue WW1 development in the Korea engine with the Eastern and Italian Fronts along with the Balkans and Palestine before coming back to the Western Front.

  4. I don’t think the Eastern Front WWI has EVER been touched by a video game, aside from Battlefield 1, kind of. I think it’s a great opportunity, as there were some great air battles.

I believe the Tsar’s Air Force was the the largest in the world prior to WWI.

    Also Ilya Muromets.

    1. Aside from Rise of Flight’s brief foray into it and Battlefield 1, no nothing has really covered it. Definitely an opportunity.

      1. As I did have all the content from RoF, I did also buy the Sikorski WW1 game at release, really enjoyed it, only I think whole Sikorski game was never been a succes.
Think it would be great if all the planes from Rof would be ported.

  5. I feel almost obligated to buy the Flying Circus titles simply out of an appreciation for the historical preservation aspect of the sims.

Would love to see them continue on in the new engine to whatever degree is sensible/feasible.

    1. Same. It’s nice to see these old aircraft flying around again! Still feel that way even after the three other volumes.

I’ve been out in the Nieuport 11 recently. Flight journals to come. Then some others!
